Based on the feedback, I purchased the catch can and crankcase catch can. Also, I purchased a short shift. Install will occur ASAP. I have to come down to WA to pick up (Bellingham). I wish our dollar was closer, this cost me $$$ in Canadian.

They are almost always good ideas. I need one. The caveat is that crappy ones can do harm.

I trust Mountune, they are a very well known Ford tuner.

Yes, but only if you paint or vinyl-wrap the catch can to look like your favorite canned drink.

If you find any oil residue on the throttle inlet or butterfly valve in the intake you need a catch can or air oil separator (a catch can you don’t have to empty, basically). If you don’t have any oil residue in those places, you don’t need a catch can.

100% a good idea. Especially for direct injected motors

This. I’ve tested these areas, including the intercooler, a few times since I got the Abarth, and there is no residue or blowby to be seen, so I don’t need one. Yet.

I plan on doing one eventually for my STi, although I have to look into it more since I am pretty sure they arent CARB legal for some stupid reason. It would be nice to have less oil go through my intercooler. I’ve also been researching oil-air seperators but those seem more complicated and have several drawbacks. Catch cans at least are quite simple and effective.

I would find it much more likely that you get an oil leak from a fitting or hose failing on that rather than the oil it “catches” causing a problem. And even if you do track and race it a lot, other maintenance is probably more important and more helpful like keeping correct oil levels and changing it frequently. Also running the correct gas and letting your engine warm up before doing hard pulls.

If you want to do it, by all means. But it is a poor quality band-aid if you aren’t doing everything else as well. And not that I think you wouldn’t, but lately I have been on the Focus ST boards and community and they’re just......just dumbasses by and large. Everyone swears by having a catch can while also bragging about using regular gas and then they wonder why they’re blowing head gaskets and getting carbon buildups at 10k miles.

It’s not CARB legal, so you’d have to switch it out before each smog check.

Yeah that was what I thought. Probably not worth the hassle then. That is the one car I want to keep 100% legal just so I have no problems with the damn smog police. I imagine they are out to fuck with people more often in the summer time in the canyons, especially at the Snake.

Depending on which county you’re in it’s only $25 for a fix-it-ticket paid to the county. I’ll give you three guesses which county I’m talking about.

If your car is stock or looks stock, then they might not notice. But, if the officers have the same mentality as me, then they’ll want you to pop the hood. But even the officers who think they know what they’re talking about don’t know shit. Depending on how the catch cans look under the hood you should be fine. To me it’s worth the $25 ticket if I get caught. But you can also hide it. I want to put a catch can in the TDI and am already planning on how to hide it.

How cold does Ft Langley get in winter? If you get regular deep freezing, you’ll want a system that’s easily reversible for winter, to prevent your catch can from turning into a frozen block of cracked aluminum.

You might be ok, but you’ll want to make sure that you keep the water drained as much as possible. Maybe check around for others with experience? This is a major part of why I didn’t ever get one for the Passat - I’m not interested in having to swap it twice a year.

I don’t drive it in the winter, so I may be OK.

Go on...

Which is to say I am looking at replacing my oil-vapor separator with a cheap catch can because I am cheap. I can’t think of how it would hurt the system, so I am eager to hear your thoughts.

I believe I read somewhere that catch cans are legal in CA as long as the PCV gases are still fed back into the intake. You just can’t vent it to atmosphere.

A good catch can should actually reduce emissions, since you aren’t burning any of the oil that would have made its way back into the intake.

Edit: Oil separator/filter is the important bit

I’ve found that carb rules have nothing to do with helping the environment, just bureaucratic bullshit (haha I’m bitter already). I wouldn’t be surprised if No EO number equals no pass, no matter what. Definitely worth considering though

I found this CARB document, it looks like “Oil separator/filter (crankcase gas filter)“ don’t require EO’s.

I could be reading it wrong though.

Any aftermarket modification to any emission control system (a broad definition) requires an Executive Order (EO) number. It’s a red tape nightmare and it either adds a huge cost to the part, or keeps out smaller manufacturers from selling in California.

While I know that a catch can doesn’t harm emissions, I’m not an engineer, nor can I test it. I agree with the methodology of the state which is, “prove the part doesn’t raise emissions.”

It’s a trade off. I think LA is still the worst, or damn near the top in terms of smog in the area.

I haven’t done any illegal mods to my cars because of the laws, so I think everyone else in the state should follow the same rules.
